You know I feel this one, lol. I currently have 408 games on my Steam wishlist. Most of them are amazing looking indie games that I'm dying to play. Someday. Some of them have been on there for years upon years. And I have 156 games in my library. I've played probably 6 of them. . .whenever one of the big sales rolls around I'll buy a bunch of games I've been wanting in bulk so that I have them when the time comes around that I actually have time to play something. And that's not counting what I have on the Switch.
If I'm honest, I know I'll end up ever having time to play only a small fraction of these. And it's ok. I've learned to let go of the FOMO whenever a new, amazing looking and popular game comes out or whenever years pass and I see an untouched game in my library that I've been wanting to play forever.
And I 100% get the sentiment of wishing you'd have started sooner. I think to myself pretty frequently that I should have started my site about 20 years earlier than I did. I would have had more time to consume the things that I'm excited to write about today and would have built up a big audience in that time to read about it. That's something I'm trying to learn to let go of also and just try to enjoy what I am doing now. I'm fortunate in that I'm not doing it as a job (as much as I want to) so I can be as casual as I want. But for someone who writes about games or develops games as their source of income, the industry is definitely a scary place right now. I'm truly hoping changes are made at some point and we can go back to having a more rational industry for the creatives who work in it.
408 games! That’s impressive. I think you do have to reach some kind of detachment about it otherwise it drives you crazy.
I get the FOMO sometimes. There’s been some huge games this year that I haven’t played. Life is so busy I can’t get round to it.
Glad I’m not alone in thinking I wish I’d started earlier. Hindsight is a wonderful thing 😅 but I guess life is like that sometimes. And we bring maturity to our creative endeavours. Right?!
Yes, definitely! I wouldn't be writing in the same way I am now 20 years ago. It's fun to sit and ponder sometimes what things would be like if I had done it but I try not to get too lost in that because it doesn't really help me in any way 😅
I know, 408 is ridiculous isn't it? I just checked this morning after reading your post to see how high up it had gotten and genuinely surprised myself. There are so many games. If I ever get to retire, I'm spending that time catching up on all of them, haha.
And I hope you do get opportunities to play some of those games you missed out on.

Haha, yes! I hope we both enjoy a golden age of gaming in our retirement years 😅 by then our wishlists will be outrageous.
Really looking forward to it! Mine will surely be in the thousands by then. And probably still contain games I added in 2017. 😂
